Preconception Counselling

The role of an obstetrician begins even before conception. Preconception care and counselling includes a comprehensive health evaluation extending from lifestyle and nutritional habits to any pre-existing or predisposed medical condition that may pose a threat to the growing baby during the course of pregnancy.

Antenatal Care

The ante-natal period begins right from the moment of conception to the beginning of labour. Its is typically a duration of 40 weeks, that is the entire term of a pregnancy.

Once the pregnancy is confirmed we offer regular pregnancy care check-ups to ensure the health of the mother and monitor the growth and development of the baby. These regular visits are also vital in early identification and management of any pregnancy related complication. Ideally an expecting mother should visit her obstetrician 13 times (more if necessary) during the course of her pregnancy; once every month for the first seven months, twice in the eighth month and 4 times (weekly) during the ninth month.

Regular pregnancy care check-ups during antenatal care are a cornerstone of ensuring the health and well-being of both the mother and the developing baby. These scheduled visits to a healthcare provider are designed to monitor the progress of the pregnancy, identify potential risks, and provide timely interventions to promote a healthy pregnancy and delivery. Here's a detailed breakdown of what regular antenatal check-ups typically involve:

1. Monitoring Maternal Health

    • Physical Examinations: Regular measurements of weight, blood pressure, and overall physical health to detect conditions like gestational hypertension or preeclampsia.
    • Blood Tests: To check for anemia, blood type, Rh factor, infections (e.g., HIV, syphilis, hepatitis), and immunity to diseases like rubella.
    • Urine Tests: To screen for urinary tract infections (UTIs), proteinuria (a sign of preeclampsia), or gestational diabetes.

2. Tracking Fetal Development

    • Ultrasounds: To monitor the baby's growth, check for abnormalities, and confirm the due date.
    • Fetal Heartbeat: Listening to the baby's heartbeat to ensure proper development.
    • Fundal Height Measurement: Measuring the size of the uterus to assess fetal growth and amniotic fluid levels.

3. Identifying and Managing Risks

    • Screening for Complications: Early detection of conditions like gestational diabetes, placenta previa, or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR).
    • Genetic Testing: Optional tests like NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) or amniocentesis to screen for chromosomal abnormalities.
    • High-Risk Pregnancies: Additional monitoring for women with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or a history of preterm labor.

4. Providing Education and Support

    • Nutritional Guidance: Advice on a balanced diet, prenatal vitamins (e.g., folic acid, iron), and foods to avoid.
    • Lifestyle Recommendations: Tips on exercise, rest, and avoiding harmful substances like alcohol, tobacco, or certain medications.
    • Birth Planning: Discussions about delivery options, pain management, and preparing for labor.

5. Emotional and Mental Well-being

    • Addressing Concerns: Providing a safe space for mothers to discuss fears, anxieties, or questions about pregnancy and childbirth.
    • Support for Mental Health: Screening for conditions like prenatal depression or anxiety and offering resources for support.

6. Frequency of Check-ups

    • First Trimester: Monthly visits to confirm pregnancy, assess health, and establish a care plan.
    • Second Trimester: Visits every 2-4 weeks to monitor growth and development.
    • Third Trimester: Weekly or bi-weekly visits as the due date approaches to ensure readiness for delivery.

7. Why Regular Check-ups Matter

    • Early Detection: Identifying and addressing potential issues before they become serious.
    • Healthy Outcomes: Reducing the risk of complications for both mother and baby.
    • Peace of Mind: Providing reassurance and confidence throughout the pregnancy journey.
